You might not know that Java was created by Sun in 1991 and released as a free product with the promise of “Write once and run anywhere”.  This resulted in Java being deployed on a multitude of devices like Servers, desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. Oracle purchased Sun in 2010 and then made Java fee based (any commercial use became fee-based) in Jan 2019. And any subsequent release of Java or any new patches to the old Java versions are now actually fee based.

Everyone has Java installed in their environment. It is the most popular language deployed with 2B installs. Granted, some Java is bundled with other products, you need to determine if what you are running would be considered free or fee based?  And you likely want to do this an Oracle Java sales rep reaches out to you. And also before you create a security exposure by not upgrading Java to a current release. It also makes good business sense to understand your exposure, allowing time to either budget for it as well as to optimize your Java footprint.
